The goal in design is to minimize mass and maximize key quantities such as torsional stiffness. The construction materials that currently dominate are steel and aluminum, and the implementation of composite materials in the structure is being intensively researched. Knowledge of material mechanics and related engineering branches, vehicle dynamics and basic engineering principles is essential in component design, analysis and optimization.
